Founded in 1942 in the lagoon town of Murtosa, Comur started with eels, the species that still defines it. When the Estado Novo regime blocked them from entering the sardine market, protecting the established Matosinhos canneries, Comur turned to innovation: in 1964, working with a German technician, they introduced smoked fish to Portugal for the first time. Now part of the O Valor do Tempo group, they produce around 30 varieties and operate The Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine retail stores across the country.
