Giacinto Callipo founded his cannery in Pizzo, Calabria in 1913, becoming the first company in Calabria and among the first in Italy to can Mediterranean tuna using the ancient fixed trap method. In 1926 the Royal Household named Callipo an Official Supplier. The historic Calabrian tuna fisheries closed in the 1960s but the family stayed in Pizzo and pivoted to Atlantic tuna, processing it entirely in Calabria across four generations. Filippo Callipo, who runs it today, also founded Io Resto in Calabria, a movement against regional emigration.
