Founded in 1879 by Heinrich Wilhelm Appel in Hannover, northern Germany, selling the first delicatessen fish from a grocery store. By the end of the 1930s Appel had grown into Germany's largest delicatessen company with over 1,000 products. The company relocated to Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast in 2004, where 350 employees operate the production facility. Market leader in German canned fish since 2008. The only canned fish producer in the world to use a hydroclave sterilization system, which enables precise sterilization with minimal cooking damage. MSC and ASC certified and palm oil-free since 2018. Now owned by Heristo AG.
