Founded in 1949 in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as a state-owned collective VEB Ostseefischerei Mecklenburg under the East German government. The plant became the largest fish smokehouse in Europe during the 1950s. After German reunification the company privatised as Rügen Fisch GmbH in 1990 and converted to a joint stock company in 2007. Germany's largest canned fish manufacturer, producing under the Rügen Fisch, Hawesta, Rügen Krone, Lysell, and Ostsee Fisch brands as well as private labels for major retailers. Acquired Hawesta in 2009 and Lysell in 2011. Thai Union Group acquired a 51% stake in 2016. Also produced under the Alstertor brand for the US market.
