Founded in 1920 by two fishermen brothers drawn to Matosinhos by its sardines, Pinhais is the only cannery on the Portuguese mainland that still packs entirely by hand. The 37-step process, from gutting to the signature hand-wrapped paper label, is carried out by generations of women who have worked these same marble prep sinks for decades. Their tomato sauce recipe is known by only a handful of people and passed down verbally. NURI is their cult export label, in production since 1935.
